Murrieta DUI Checkpoint Results in Multiple Arrests

Due to a substantial number of DUI collisions in recent years, resulting in fatalities and multiple injuries, Murrieta police announced their intention to set up a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint. Three days in advance of holding the checkpoint, they publicized the operation, although they did not disclose the location. As a result, eight people were arrested between the hours of 7:00 p.m. Saturday, February 10th and 1:00 a.m. Sunday, February 11th.

Notifying the Public

On Thursday, February 7th, Murrieta police publicized that they would hold a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint over the weekend. In an effort to bring awareness to the issue of driving under the influence, the force stated, “Over the course of the past three years the Murrieta Police Department officers have investigated 209 DUI collisions which have claimed 4 lives and resulted in another 72 injuries.”

The decision to publicize the operation aims to decrease the number of people on the road who are driving under the influence. “Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely,” police stated in their press release.

Checkpoint Proves Effective

Murrieta police set up the checkpoint at the intersection of Margarita and Torrey Pines roads. Looking for drivers who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, prescription drugs, or marijuana, as well as verifying that drivers were properly licensed, police screened a total of 820 cars within a six-hour period.

As a result of the checkpoint, a total of eight people were arrested. Five were arrested for driving without a license, or their licenses had been suspended or revoked. One had an outstanding warrant and was arrested. The two others were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.

Addressing Dangerous Behavior

While driving under the influence remains a national problem, Murrieta’s efforts shed light on dangerous behavior behind the wheel. Loss of life and serious personal injury can result from irresponsible driving practices, so it is crucial to raise awareness around these reckless actions.
