Earlier this year, a Temecula teen resident severely injured himself while attempting to pull off a stunt with his car. He was accompanied by a friend who intended to film the trick and upload it to YouTube. Fortunately, the friend was uninjured in the accident. Let’s take a closer look at this personal injury that serves as an example of what not to do with a vehicle.

The Accident

The 16-year-old boy was attempting to “ghost ride the whip,” or dance outside of his car while it was moving. This phenomenon was made famous in rapper Mistah F.A.B.’s 2006 “Ghost Ride It” song and music video. Unfortunately, the stunt didn’t go as planned and the teen was run over by his truck.

A bystander — Dexter Padilla — saw the incident and went to help. He found the boy alive but bleeding and injured. He called 9-1-1 and found out from the boy’s friend what had happened as they waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Preventing Youth Personal Injuries

Apparently, this incident was not condoned by the victim’s parents, but it does serve as a reminder that we need always to be aware of what our children are doing. We also need to have in-depth discussions about safety and responsibility when teenagers are given the freedom to drive. Thankfully both teens in this accident will be just fine, but the outcome could have been tragic.

Because the young man was only a provisional driver and not supposed to have other minors in the vehicle, he may lose his permit.
