In early December 2019, the Los Angeles Superior Court awarded a Culver City victim $21.5 million for injuries he sustained from a car striking his motorcycle in February 2018. The defendants, Hardin Irvine Automotive Inc. and Justin Dimapasac, one of its employees, had admitted fault before the trial began, and the jury was tasked with determining the cost of damages.
How the Accident Happened
On the evening of February 8, 2018, 28-year-old Matthew Rada was riding his motorcycle down the San Diego Freeway when a vehicle suddenly veered out of the HOV lane and collided with Rada. The impact caused Rada to lose control, sending him flying across three lanes of traffic and crashing him into a flatbed trailer. One of Hardin Irvine Automotive Inc.’s mechanics, Justin Dimapasac, was test driving a customer’s Kia Optima in the HOV lane at the time, and his sudden decision to change lanes led to the collision.
Caught on Camera
Another motorcyclist who was traveling along the same highway was able to capture the incident on video, using a helmet camera to document the event. When the accident happened, this individual pulled over and volunteered to turn over the footage to law enforcement. This footage allowed the jury to watch the events unfold, making it clear that Dimapasac did appear to come out of nowhere when he struck the motorcyclist.
As a result of this dramatic incident, Rada suffered severe and significant injuries. According to the lawsuit that Rada and his attorneys filed, he suffered “life-changing injuries in the collision, including several orthopedic fractures requiring multiple surgeries, chronic pain and commensurate mental and emotional distress.” Now that the damages have been awarded, Rada hopes to move forward with his life with the financial assistance he needs in order to focus fully on his recovery.
