In late June, a driver on Interstate 15 struck another vehicle, causing a chain reaction that led to seven hospitalizations and over ten hours of heavy traffic. According to a California Highway Patrol Officer, the pileup started around noon on June 21, when a Temecula woman driving a Nissan Sentra allegedly rear-ended a Dodge Ram pickup because she did not slow down as drivers in front of her started braking. The driver of an 18-wheeler who was driving behind the Nissan then tried to stop his truck but ended up striking the Nissan and skidding across all lanes of traffic before ending up partially down an embankment of the Temecula River.
Meanwhile, four other sedans and another pickup struck each other, causing even more damage. Traffic quickly backed up, and a SigAlert was issued by 12:10 p.m. to notify drivers that congestion was heavy. In order for emergency vehicles to reach the scene of the accident, several lanes on both sides of the I-15 freeway had to be closed, delaying traffic even further. By 11:00 p.m., more than eleven hours after the incident, traffic reports still showed some congestion in the area.
According to the fire department, seven people were hospitalized due to injuries sustained from the crash. One person had serious injuries, and two individuals reported sustaining moderate injuries. The other four people were treated for minor injuries.
